Is Running Bad for You?

I was out at lunchtime in the sun/rain/sun/rain ... and it was hard/painful both physically and mentally ("I feel so tired, I just have to stop"). Maybe it was the coach who tried too do too many reps too quickly?

Anyway I love running, but is it good for me?

Pros:
Fresh air
Outdoors
Exercise buzz
Uses calories so I can eat more
Helps me live longer (supposedly)

Cons:
Damage to joints (but I don't really run that far).
Injury
Other stuff?

All this waffle is an introduction to an interesting article I've just seen in the BBC online Magazine - Could jogging be bad for you?

Please read, including the comments at the end, then add your own comments to this post.

Happy, healthy harriering.

Edinburgh Marathon 'Hairy Haggis' Relay

On the sizzling Sunday morning of 31st May, four members of the HarperCollins Harriers competed in the 2009 Edinburgh Marathon 'Hairy Haggis' Team Relay. Jethro Lennox, Ewan Ross, David Jamieson and David Mumford were eager to make full use of their intensive training and show off their new, Kevin Robbins designed, team vests, produced specially for the occasion.
On the day 8,419 full marathon runners and 965 relay teams started the race. The HarperCollins Harriers, seeded 12th (on their estimated time) had a scorching race, topping the Corporate Category and finishing 8th team overall in a time of 2:42:55. It was a glorious occasion with constant sunshine and smiles, the 100,000 plus crowd cheered on the runners with shouts of ‘well done’, ‘keep going’ and ‘come on the Harriers’. Jethro was pictured in the Herald’s race report next day. Beth Mennie from the training group also took part with her friends as ‘The Go (Slow) Team’.

In January, the Harper Collins Harriers had competed in the Devil’s Burdens, a relay race of 31 km over the Lomond Hills, for teams of six runners. They also hope to take part in the forthcoming Co-operative jogscotland 5k Challenge at Glasgow Green on the 24th June.

If you are interested in joining the Glasgow running group for training sessions (geared to all abilities) then contact Jethro. Join us to prepare for our next 2 mile handicap race along the canal and take part in future relay races.

22nd Collins 2 mile handicap run results

Great running from everyone today. 1st home was Brian in an excellant time of 15:49 considering this was the first time he has run the course. Ewan qualified for the trophy even though he finished in 6th place - everyone else in front of him had not run the handicap enough to qualify for the trophy. Next time should be a closer race for the much coveted handicap trophy. Dave Jamieson missed Ewans over 40s record by 1 second but he still got quickest time on the day with a speedy 11:12 - next time could see a sub 11 minutes from an over 40 - come on Ewan!!

Here are the results;
Postn. Name Time
1 Brian Murray 15:49
2 Beth Mennie 19:30
3 David Jamieson 11:12
4 Derek Thomson 13:32
5 Neil Logan 13:53
6 Ewan Ross 12:33
7 Diane Gallagher 14:41
8 David Mumford 12:44
9 Andrew Jackson 15:17

I have also updated the master spreadsheet so you can compare to previous runs and check if you got a personal best.

New HC Harriers running vest

I'm not certain if everyone has seen the new running vests. Kevin designed the logo for us. I think it looks great and should make it easy to spot us in any races we enter.

Tuesday 19th May for next Handicap run

Let me know if you would like to run in the next handicap run to get your start time.

Collins 2 mile handicap run

The Collins handicap run is a 2 mile timed run along the nearby canal held at occasional lunchtimes when time suits. The aim of a handicap race is for everyone to finish at around the same time. The slowest runners start first and the fastest last. If the timings work out well then everyone should finish about the same time.
The course
The route will start near Westerhill Road and take in a short section of the Clyde and Forth Canal being around 2 miles long. The finish is just before the bridge at Cadder. Remember this is aimed at everyone (male and female) no matter how fit as long as you can stagger around two miles. The much coveted Coolins Handicap trophy goes to the first person across the line.
Route is here. Previous results here

Relay race suggestions

We've got the Devil's Burdens at the start of the year, but what other relay races could we enter?

I'm keen to (proudly) wear our new snazzy vests (well just one of them).

So come on, send your suggestions using the comment function below.
